Our mission
Fighting robots is thrilling and educational, but getting involved can feel intimidating—often requiring prior experience, expensive equipment, or significant time to get started. Our mission is to make combat robotics accessible to everyone, intentionally expanding access for youth and communities who may have otherwise never had the opportunity to interact with or build a robot. We’ll do this by offering affordable hands-on opportunities to fight our in-house bots, as well as hosting birthday parties, public tournaments, and courses designed for all skill levels, including scholarship-supported programs. Through these experiences, participants can develop real-world engineering skills such as coding, 3D modeling, materials science and much more, while becoming part of a fully-inclusive and collaborative community. These skills translate directly to college applications, resumes, and careers.
We aim to entertain, inspire, and empower the Portland community and beyond!

Meet the founders!
The RoboDome was founded by Hannah Arey and Max Luu. We are an engaged couple and engineering team united by a shared passion for making robotics fun and accessible to all!
Max holds a degree in Robotics Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and has been involved in robotics his whole life - including school robotics competitions, engineering award-winning robotic shoes, working as a mechatronics engineer, and collaborating on robotics projects with engineers seen on BattleBots® (go Ribbot!).
Hannah completed her undergrad degree at WSU, then earned her master’s in Entrepreneurial Bioengineering at UW (go cougs & dawgs!) . Throughout her education she was involved in organizing and marketing youth STEM outreach events, and developed a lifelong passion for inspiring kids’ enthusiasm for STEM.
Max’s love of robotics was infectious. We started as dedicated watchers of BattleBots® and National Havoc Robot League™ (NHRL) livestreams and soon turned to building robots of our own to compete in local tournaments. While watching bots fight on TV is exciting, being a part of the action felt completely different—the sounds, the chaos, and the energy of the community was incredible.
The idea for The RoboDome was born on a six-hour drive home from a tournament. We kept thinking: how do we get more people involved in combat robotics? We thought about how intimidating it was to start building our first combat robot, even as engineers ourselves, and realized how valuable it would be to offer courses that guide you through building your very first bot. As the idea evolved, our vision expanded beyond just courses.
Our goal became to also create a local space where anyone can walk in, pick up a controller, and get to experience the thrill of fighting bots - without the intensive time and financial commitments. This is what we are working on creating today. We can’t wait for you to fight with our bots and hope the experience sparks the creativity and curiosity to think about making your own!
Whether you’re here for some casual fights or you’re ready to take a deep dive into the world of combat robots, we’re beyond excited to bring The RoboDome to PDX!
